What Is a Differential and What Does It Do?

What is a differential and what does it do? Most people have no idea. A differential is a gear train with three parts that allows each of the driven wheels to rotate at a different speed. This is necessary when the vehicle makes a turn, since the inner wheels have a shorter distance to travel than the outer ones. Without a it, your car would only be able to make right turns!

The differential is connected to the driveshaft, which runs down the center of the car and connects to the wheels through a series of axle shafts. Each axle shaft runs to one of the driven wheels. It consists of two bevel gears inside a housing, with the input shaft in the center. The input shaft is connected to the driveshaft and turns both of the bevel gears at the same speed. However, each gear is mounted on a spider gear carrier that allows it to rotate independently from the other. This gives each wheel its own speed and allows for smooth turning. They are essential for safe driving!

Have you ever wondered what makes your car able to turn smoothly? Now you know! Differentials are essential for safe driving and allow your car to make turns without any issues. Next time you’re out on the road, take a moment to think about all the different components that work together to keep your car running smoothly. From the engine to the different systems, there are many complex systems at work!
